React vs. Vue.js: A Business Owner’s Guide to Frontend Frameworks

If you’re looking to develop an application that’s going to require a lot of development time (due to complexity), need a large number of developers to work on the project, or want the ability to create native mobile apps then you should use React because it is the most popular library and has the largest ecosystem. Vue.js is a much easier framework to learn than React and also has great documentation along with good support for using in conjunction with Laravel through Inertia.js, which makes it well-suited for small teams building applications within a Laravel environment.

What is most likely to be a deciding factor for your company when developing a new web application that has multiple components of interactive elements (dashboards, single page apps, etc.) – if there are going to be real time updates, what are the complexities of the users interactions? These are factors that would determine whether your developers decide to use either React or Vue.js. Both frameworks provide many good things. But it ultimately comes down to how well they fit into your companies specific needs.

In this article we will break down each option in business terms. This way you can talk to your development team, or agency about what type of technology best fits your needs.

Why This Decision Matters for Your Business

The decision of your Frontend Framework will affect three elements you care about with regards to your project; how fast your project can be shipped (development speed); how easy it is for you to hire or find developers who have experience developing this type of application to support your team (talent availability); and how much the overall cost of maintaining that application as a whole will be in the future (long-term maintenance costs).

React and Vue both create fast, modern web applications. Both frameworks differ from one another based on their ecosystems, philosophies and the contexts where they best fit.

React: The Industry Standard

React is maintained by Meta. It also has the biggest ecosystem and community of all front-end frameworks. If you were to ask ten web developers what front end framework they are familiar with, most would say React. The fact that it is so ubiquitous can be very beneficial in practice.

React utilizes JSX (a way to write code that combines HTML like markup with JavaScript logic). JSX can be a great tool as well as an expressive one; however, because JSX is used, new developers who come from traditional HTML/CSS will have a greater learning curve.
As mentioned earlier, React does not define the structure of your application, which provides many options for experienced teams; however, because it does not define the structure of your application, there are going to be more design decisions to make prior to development.

The React Ecosystem is a “large” library of components that are used to build Web Applications. This Ecosystem is very flexible as it allows developers to build Server-Side Rendered Web Sites using Next.js, Mobile Apps using React Native, Static Site Generation, and thousands of Third-Party Components and Development Tools. In addition, many State Management Solutions exist in this Ecosystem.

React is suited best for: Large Teams (as its Ecosystem and Conventions can be easily scaled) , Complex Applications (that have a lot of complex State to Manage), Organizations that will require a React Native Mobile Companion App to their Website, and Organizations who desire maximum hiring flexibility.

Vue.js: The Progressive Framework

Vue was developed by Evan You while he worked at Google, and has a design philosophy that centers around being accessible (i.e. easy to learn) and focused on providing an optimal experience for the developers who use it. The syntax used by Vue, which is based upon templates like HTML, will feel more intuitive than other front-end frameworks to developers that have prior knowledge of HTML. Additionally, Vue’s documentation is generally considered to be the best in the front end community.

Since Vue is also designed to allow developers to “build progressively”, it allows developers to begin by using Vue for just the parts of their web site they want to make interactive, even if they are going to eventually build a single page application. Since this progressive approach is available, it would seem logical that it could help developers build projects where there is no initial need for the complete complexity of a Single Page Application Framework.

It is very easy to use Laravel with Vue using Inertia.js. Using both of these tools together allows you to create a Single Page Application user experience and maintain the simplicity and security that comes from having your back-end logic on the server side as opposed to client side. When developing in Laravel, using Vue with Inertia is likely to be your most efficient option.

There are several other parts of the Vue Ecosystem. The first one is Nuxt.js which provides Server Side Rendering. The second is Vue Router which provides Navigation. And finally there is Pinia which provides State Management. Although smaller than React’s ecosystem, it has everything you would need, with high quality, official libraries that have been well designed.

Vue is typically used by: Smaller to Medium sized Teams (the lower barrier to entry means faster ramp up time), Laravel based Applications (Inertia.js will allow you to seamlessly integrate them), Rapid Prototyping (Vue’s simpler API means less time to get started), Projects that prioritize Developer Experience/Code Clarity.

We utilize both React and Vue.js and will decide which one is best suited for each project’s specifications — not by our preferences of the two frameworks.

When building individualized single page applications that require complex state management, as well as have the need to be converted into mobile apps in the future, we typically prefer to build using React. It has an extremely large and robust set of tools available to solve complex user interactions out-of-the-box.

In most cases for applications that are integrated into Laravel, I use Vue with Inertia.js. This combination is very productive because it allows developers to work on both front end and back end within one Laravel application; creates a Single Page Application (SPA) feel to the user; and makes the overall development process easier. This is also what powers many of our largest, most complex and most successful client projects.

Each of these technologies delivers an outstanding result depending on its proper application. Ultimately, you want to select a technology based upon what will help achieve your project’s objectives and not the opposite.

Frequently Asked Questions

You could keep your back-end logic and API, but you’d have to rewrite your front-end. That’s a lot of work. It rarely happens in practice, as both frameworks continue to develop and get better, so by that time, it’ll likely make no sense to switch.

Both are super-fast in actual projects. Differences in speed between them are minor and dependent almost entirely on how well they’re implemented rather than what the framework is.

Right now, React has the bigger global job market. Vue is growing strong, especially in Europe and Asia. Either way, finding good devs for these frameworks will not be a concern until probably 2035 or later.
