llms.txt Explained: How to Make Your Website AI-Readable

Quick Summary: The llms.txt is an optimized text document created for your web site, as well as the primary domain name (yoursite.com/llms.txt). This llms.txt is designed to provide structured information regarding your company, its products/services, the level of experience and/or specialization and the most relevant content. While the robots.txt informs crawler agents what URL paths to crawl or avoid on your website, the llms.txt will inform the AI agent what type of business you have. Low cost implementation of the llms.txt along with schema mark-up and geo-specific content creation results in a high degree of visibility within AI generated search results.

You already have a robots.txt file telling search engine crawlers how to navigate your site. Now there is a new standard emerging for a different kind of reader: AI language models. The llms.txt file tells AI systems what your business does, what you offer, and where your most important content lives.

What Is llms.txt?

llms.txt is an industry-standard plain text file stored in the root directory of your site (yoursite.com/llms.txt). The document is formatted in a way that allows Large Language Models (LLMs), which are used by artificial intelligence platforms, to read and interpret this information, much like reading an introductory letter from your business to LLMs.

Unlike robots.txt files that inform crawlers where to go or where to not go, llms.txt informs AI models about your business. Specifically, llms.txt contains your company name and description, primary services/products offered, your main content pages and their purpose(s), areas of focus, and your preferred method of contact.

This format was introduced in 2024-2025 because AI developers and business owners realized there was no commonality on how AI models understood each unique website. While schema markup does provide some insight into websites and its related data, the data is typically spread out over numerous webpages requiring the AI model to parse through all of the HTML code. In contrast, llms.txt provides a singular, compiled, machine-readable summary of your business that is easily readable by AI models.

Why It Matters for Your Business

The way people seek out information is evolving. As individuals type in questions like “Which web design agencies use both WordPress and Laravel?” into their Google AI Overview, or ask Perplexity “Who can provide ongoing website maintenance for my small business?”, the AI will have to sift through thousands of possible options, and determine which businesses to reference.

If there are no obvious indicators of who you are, or what you offer, the AI system may portray your business inaccurately, omit your business from consideration altogether, or incorrectly identify it with a competitor. Through llms.txt, you have some level of influence on how AI portrays you, although this does not ensure the AI cites your business; however, it does help assure that if/when the AI considers your business, they are working off of an accurate representation of what you do.

Early mover advantages exist due to AI Search’s rapid growth rate, and by establishing yourself as an AI readable source at an early stage of development, your competitive advantages compound over time.

What Goes in an llms.txt File

An llms.txt document that contains structured data will typically include a number of different categories of information about your business; including your identity as a business (e.g. name, what you do/are known for, what type of industry you are in); your offerings as a business (services, products, capabilities); the most important web pages on your site (your pillar pages which contain overarching topics to guide your users through your site; service pages that describe each offering; and topic or subtopic pages for each of these pillars and services); the specific areas of expertise (or specialties) you have as a business; where you conduct business and/or serve markets; and how people can get in touch with you.

Here is an example structure:

# Business Name
> Company description in 2-3 sentences

## Services
- Service 1: Brief description
- Service 2: Brief description

## Key Pages
- /services/web-design/: Custom web design for businesses
- /blog/custom-web-design-guide/: Comprehensive guide to web design in 2026

## Expertise
- WordPress development
- Laravel applications
- AI integration

## Contact
- Website: https://yoursite.com
- Email: [email protected]

The exact format may evolve as the standard matures, but the principle remains: provide clear, structured, factual information about your business in a format that AI models can easily parse.

How to Implement llms.txt

Step 1: Create the file. he llms.txt you create should be as accurate as possible, with no exaggerated or promotional language. Be precise in what you say about your business — AI models work best when they receive a simple, direct statement; (“We design & build customized WordPress websites for small businesses”) is an example of this.

Step 2: Upload to your website root. Put the file where an AI system can access it by placing it in your site’s root directory (yoursite.com/llms.txt)

Step 3: Complement with schema markup. llms.txt will perform at its best when you have a complete set of schema markup for each page of your website. This includes organization schema in your home page, service schema in your service pages, FAQPage schema in your FAQs section(s), and article schema in your blog posts. The additional structured data provided by these schema help AI systems understand your content.

Step 4: Keep it updated. If you are adding new services, publishing new articles, changing your business focus, etc., then you need to make sure you have updated the llms.txt file to represent the state of your business today. Outdated llms.txt files are worse than no llms.txt file as they can cause an AI system to incorrectly assume things about your business.

llms.txt + Schema Markup + GEO: Full AI Visibility

These three components collectively provide complete AI visibility.

Schema markup identifies your content in terms of **meaning**, i.e., what does this content mean? (This is a product; This is an FAQ; This is a service description etc.) Who is the Author? Schema adds meaning to your HTML, which AI can read to understand the content on each of your web pages.

llms.txt document serves as an identification of your business (the “who”) and its capabilities (what), as well as your most critical content all-in-one document. The llms.txt is essentially a “one-stop” version of what is distributed by schema markup on multiple pages.

GEO-optimized content is the actual material that can be cited or referenced by the artificial intelligence engine. Citing credible factual information, concise and objective summaries, as well as thorough and authoritative content gives artificial intelligence the data it needs to reference you in generated responses.

Together they provide a full spectrum of the presence of your business within artificial intelligence, making it easier for them to recognize, rely upon, and reference.
